“We came out a little slower and it progressed through the game, but Stephenville was just on top of it tonight and they came out ready to fight,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “We’ll take this loss and move forward into the playoffs.”
Despite the loss, the Lady Lions (10-4, 4-2) will represent District 4-4A as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs against District 3 third seed Snyder. The bi-district playoff match will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, March 26 at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium. Brownwood beat Snyder, 7-0, in its season opener.
“We worked really hard tonight and I’m proud of the way these seniors played,” Mosqueda said. “I can’t say enough about these seniors. I thank God every time I go to bed at night because these seniors have given me the best first year I could ever dream of, and I’m so sorry it didn’t end they wanted it to, but they played great this season and I can’t wait to start a playoff run.”
The Lady Lions yielded the first goal with 13:11 left in the first half on a free kick. In the second half, Brownwood was awarded three free kicks from 30, 20 and 25 yards out but could not convert. The Honeybees then tacked on an insurance goal with 13 minutes left.
“I think the girls get a little bit excited when we get down there and have free kicks because most of the times they go over,” Mosqueda said.
