MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lady Lions put themselves in position to play for the District 4-4A girls soccer championship after rallying to defeat Mineral Wells in a penalty kick shootout Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 throughout the bulk of the contest, the Lady Lions finally scored with 92 seconds left in regulation when Watts Jones ripped the tying shot from 25 yards out.

In the penalty kick shootout, Kennedi Johnson and Ibis Alvarado converted goals while Brooke Price recorded three saves in goal to give the Lady Lions the victory.

“I always tell the girls to play 100 percent until the last whistle and that’s exactly what they did tonight,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “It was a fight and they never gave up. I couldn’t be more proud of them and their determination to keep up the hard work.”

Having swept the 4-4A series from Mineral Wells, Brownwood (10-3, 4-1) is next slated to host Stephenville at 5 p.m. Friday, March 19 in the regular season and home finale with the district title up for grabs. The Lady Lions are undefeated in Brownwood this season.

Friday night’s Lions-Mineral Wells soccer game was canceled and currently there are no plans to make up the game.
