SAN ANTONIO – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets baseball team slipped to 0-2 on the season with a 9-6 road loss at Trinity Tuesday night.
Howard Payne fell behind 7-0 before striking for six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Trinity then added the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the frame.
The Yellow Jackets finished with eight hits – three by Trevor Fletcher and one each by Derek Ford, Nolyn Box, Jonathan McKay, Rylee McGee and David Paleo. Fletcher and Gifford also recorded two RBIs each while Paleo knocked in a run.
On the mound, Ricky Mays, Cyah Daniel, Preston Taylor, Gary Blair, Landin Blass, Dean Evans, Reese Glynn and Johnny Cravey combined to allow six earned runs on nine hits with 12 walks and just one strikeout.
The HPU defense committed two errors.
The Yellow Jackets host UT-Dallas in three weekend games at Don Shepard Park – the first at 2 p.m. Friday and a noon doubleheader Saturday.
