ABILENE – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets slipped to 0-10 in American Southwest Conference action and 0-14 on the season with a 74-70 road loss at McMurry Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets shot 37 percent (25 of 67) from the floor, 25 percent (5 of 20) from beyond the three-point arc, and 65 percent (15 of 23) at the free throw line. HPU owned a 51-43 edge in rebounds, but committed 20 turnover while forcing just 15.
Howard Payne’s Tyrell Thompson posted a double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds, trailed by James Helzer with 18 points, Michael House with 17, Evan Adkins and Jaylan Ballou with five apiece, Jerren Godfrey with three and Reese Ridder with two points.
McMurry (4-10, 4-6) converted 39 percent (27 of 69) of its shots, 26 percent (8 of 31) of its treys, and 57 percent (12 of 21) of its free throws.
Remy Minor led McMurry with 26 points followed by Shaydon Campbell with 12 and Colby Cork with 11.
Howard Payne visits Hardin-Simmons (12-5, 7-3) – an 81-74 winner over Sul Ross Thursday – at 6 p.m. Saturday.
