The Brownwood Lady Lions remained undefeated in District 6-4A volleyball action and set up a showdown with No. 13 Stephenville for sole possession of first place following Friday’s 25-15, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Gatesville at Warren Gym.
“They came together as a team and it’s awesome to start district 3-0 and get back to ourselves before the tough test going against Stephenville on Tuesday,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Allison Smith. “The girls played great and put what we’ve been practicing into the game and made it work. They came through the adversity of dropping behind in the last two sets and pushed through to win just one point at a time.”
Brownwood’s offense was ignited by Olivia Fowler with 10 kills followed by Katelyn Windham with six, Kylie Morris with four, Jaylen Savage with three, Ashlyn Storm and Tessa Goodwin with two apiece and Gracie Boswell added one.
Goodwin tallied 23 assists while Caitlyn Moody was credited with one.
Morris served a team-best five aces followed by three from Fowler, two from Boswell and one from Windham.
Defensively, Moody logged 15 digs trailed by Fowler with 10, Morris and Becca Church with five apiece, Goodwin with four, Boswell with three, Windham and Kassidy Wooten with two each and Savage with one.
At the net, Goodwin recorded four blocks, Storm added two and Windham and Fowler finished with one apiece.
Smith credited the Lady Lions’ serving for sparking rallies in both the second and third sets.
“Our serving started looking like us again,” Smith said. “Kylie Morris and Olivia Fowler both had good runs in set two and set three when we were behind and caught us back up and gave us a good, fighting chance. The defense was led by Moody and the offense was led by our setter Tessa Goodwin. They really pushed through and helped us get the win tonight.”
The Lady Lions (9-5, 3-0) wrap up the first half of District 6-4A action and the home portion of their schedule when they host league co-leader and No. 13 Stephenville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
