The Brookesmith Mustangs are in search of a new Week 1 opponent.
According to Brookesmith head football coach Scott Edmondson, the UIL is not allowing the Veribest Falcons – who were to host the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday – to play their Week 1 game.
Veribest went into a COVID quarantine after six days of preseason practice and resumed workouts this week, therefore the Falcons have not adhered to the mandatory 10-day re-acclimation period, Edmondson said.
Edmondson stated he hopes to find a new Week 1 foe, but the odds are slim at this point. If the Mustangs don’t play this week, their season opener will take place Friday, Sept. 4 when the No. 7 Strawn Greyhounds visit Brookesmith.
Brookesmith is coming off a 9-2 campaign, its best since 1996, but is still seeking its first postseason victory since 1955. The Mustangs have advanced to the postseason nine times in school history, including each of the last four seasons.
