Brownwood News – Good Samaritan celebrates their 25th anniversary this year, and as the organization prepares for its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser, there are some unique bowls to be claimed this year to honor that accomplishment. Empty Bowls will be held on Thursday, April 5th, at the Brownwood Coliseum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Ten artists in the Brownwood area were selected by Good Samaritan to contribute with their artwork on special heart-shaped bowls that will be sold via a silent auction at the event this Thursday. The shape of the bowls ties directly into the logo for the Empty Bowls project.

There is also a special artist edition bowl from Kohler and a stoneware crock piece painted by Ted and Martha Shelton who are well known in the area for their wildflower art.

About the Artists and their Bowls:

bowl by Kit Timmins

Kit Timmins is an award winning pastel artist, being juried into the Stars of Texas Art Show, winning the pastel award six years. The orchids in this bowl are a portrayal of the second generation flowers from the little plant that graces her kitchen window.

bowl by Tasha Carter

Tasha Carter is the Early High School Art Teacher. Her heart shaped bowl features a stunning peacock with plumes spreading throughout.

bowl by Julie Mize

Howard Payne graduate Julie Mize teaches art at the Brownwood Middle School. She has been instrumental in the production of Empty Bowls for many years, encouraging her students to help decorate the bowls. Her bowl is inspired from pottery styles found in Italy and Greece.

bowl by Kim Peterson

Kim Peterson currently works in the health care field and has been very involved with the community for many years. Kim works in several different mediums, but currently is focusing her art with glass work. Her heart bowl represents a heart for the community she serves.

bowl by Debbie Morelock

Debbie Morelock is the owner and operator of the famed Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast just outside of Brownwood. She’s well known for her contributions to the community, and works hard to make Brownwood a better place in everything she does. Debbie’s bowl celebrates nature with a dragonfly impression in the middle of a serene blue.

bowl by Amanda Coers

Amanda Coers is the editor and owner of Brownwood News. She is the mother of seven children, and in whatever spare time she finds she volunteers in the community. Her preferred medium is watercolor and ink, with a focus on whimsical mermaids.

bowl by Jeremy Serna

Jermey Serna is a local artist who has been painting for 25 years. He is the owner and operator of the popular Painting With Friends in downtown Brownwood, where participants can enjoy their favorite beverages and fellowship with friends while creating chosen works of art.

bowl by Summer Kevil

Summer Kevil is a watercolor artist in Early. She is passionate about low impact living, nutrition, and her two daughters. Summer grew up in Colorado and moved to Early 11 years ago. Her bowl features a pointillism representation of two hearts.

bowl by Jacquie McMullen

Jacquie McMullen is an award winning pastel artist who has been juried into the Stars of Texas Art Show and others across the state. She lives in Dublin, Texas, and is married to realtor Mac McMullen. They have three daughters and six grandchildren. Jacquie specializes in portraits and landscapes.

bowl by Sally Davis

Sally Davis is the art teacher at the Early Middle School. Her vibrant bowl gives the impression of movement with swirling lines, various shapes, and a cool color selection with purples and blues.

The silent auction begins at 11 a.m., the same time the event gets underway and will continue until a “last call” just before 6 p.m. when the winners of the auction items will be announced. Auction winners do not need to be present to win, but they are asked to pick up their bowls at Good Samaritan within a week or the bowl will be awarded to the next highest bidder.

Cost for admission into the event is $10 and includes soup, crackers, water and your choice of a hand painted bowl.

Proceeds from the silent auction will join all other funds raised by the Empty Bowls event to fight hunger in Brown County, with 10 percent being donated to international charity Food for the Hungry as a tithe.

Empty Bowls is Good Samaritan Brownwood’s single largest fundraiser for the year in order to help the organization with its fight against local hunger. As the true anniversary is in the fall, a large scale celebration for the 25th anniversary of the organization is being planned for later this year.
