On Thursday, April 17, The Snags and Catch It competed in the annual Coggin 6th Grade Flag Football Super Bowl. The event was held at the Brownwood High School practice field and included the 6th Grade Choir performing the National Anthem and the BHS Drumline pumping up the crowd. Fifth-grade students from each Brownwood ISD (BISD) elementary school were also bused in to enjoy the event.
Prior to the kickoff each team ran through large paper signs crafted by Becky Holcomb and the 6th Grade Art Department.
Coach Brandon Bown provided a play-by-play recap of the game:
Referee Cliff Ross officiated the coin toss, where the Snags (White) won and deferred to the second half.
Catch It (Maroon) started strong with a short return on the opening kickoff by Aiden Alcala. Jayden Berniard sparked their first drive with a 15-yard run, followed by Karter McFarland’s dynamic 27-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Zaidyn Green. A successful two-point conversion pass from Green to Hunter Holland gave Catch It an early 8-0 lead. Catch It attempted an onside kick, but the Snags recovered. Car’mello Bevill secured a first down, then Dion Deshields broke free for a 40-yard touchdown. The Snags’ failed conversion left the score with Catch It on top 8-6.
Catch It responded after Jayden Berniard’s 20-yard kickoff return. Short gains by Truth Brooks and Bryson Andrews set up another touchdown pass from Green to McFarland. With the two-point conversion unsuccessful, Catch It led 14-6. Another failed onside kick attempt gave the Snags possession, but after Beckham Badgeley’s 15-yard run, The Snags fumbled. Aiden Alcala capitalized, returning it 77 yards for a touchdown. The score remained 20-6 after a missed conversion. Catch It attempted another onside kick, but The Snags came up with it in good field position. Colt Longabaugh then connected with Bentley Cochran for 20 yards, setting up Bevill’s 21-yard touchdown run on the next play. A failed conversion kept the score in Catch It’s favor at 20-12. The Snags’ own onside kick attempt succeeded, with Deshields recovering. Following a great 25-yard run from Deshields, Emri Navarro caught a touchdown pass from Longabaugh, narrowing the gap to 20-18 at halftime.
The second half began with another unsuccessful Catch It onside kick, recovered by Braxton Musick for the Snags. Musick dominated the drive, accumulating 34 yards through a run and pass ending in a touchdown. A successful two-point pass from Longabaugh to Bevill gave The Snags their first lead, 26-20. Despite a nice 12-yard return by Truth Brooks, Catch It’s next drive faltered when Longabaugh intercepted a deep pass. The Snags capitalized with Longabaugh making completions to Bevill (12 yards) and Deshields (14 yards). Catch It puts on the pressure looking for crucial stop. After a near interception by Brooks, Bevill secures a critical first-down run to keep the drive alive. The following play results in Bevill scoring yet another touchdown for The Snags. A successful two-point conversion from Beckham Badgeley extended The Snags’ lead to 34-20.
Catch It fought back with big runs by Green, culminating in a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, closing the gap to 34-28. However, The Snags sealed their victory with strategic runs by Longabaugh and Deshields, running out the clock to claim this year’s Coggin 6th Grade Flag Football Super Bowl Championship, 34-28.
Coach Brown expressed an extended thank you to the following individuals and organizations for making this year’s Super Bowl a success:
Brownwood Athletics (for use the High School Football field because of the construction at Gordon Wood), Charles Musgrove (media and streaming), BISD Maintenance (field preparations), Cliff Ross (Referee), Maria Arellano and BISD bus drivers (student transportation to the field), Micah Ripley (6th Grade Choir Director), Becky Holcomb and the 6th Grade Art Department (run through signs), Mr. and Mrs. Lambert and Nathan Lacy (BHS Mighty Maroon Drumline), Coggin 6th Grade Principal Veronica Ballinger, and BHS Principal Lindsay Smith.
“Thanks to Mitch Moore at BISD Central Support for working with us to figure out when and where we were going to play our regular season and Super Bowl due to construction at the stadium,” added Brown. “I would also like to thank Stehl Ratliff for being the Honorary Guest Speaker for our 2024 Football Draft, Ashley Martin and my wife Jana Brown for helping us with this year’s draft, all 61 of our flag football participants, and last but certainly not least, our parents, guardians, and families of our student athletes for supporting them this season.”
