MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lions rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, then held off a charge from the Mineral Wells Rams in their final at-bat for a 4-3 victory in District 6-4A baseball action Tuesday.
The win, coupled with losses by Stephenville (16-10-2, 2-7) to Brock, 3-2, in nine innings, and Glen Rose (15-13, 2-7) to Graham, 6-0, Tuesday night, locked up the fourth and final playoff berth from District 6-4A for the Lions (12-15, 4-5).
Tuesday’s results clinched the district championship for Brock (21-2, 8-1), which will be the No. 1 seed from District 6 in the 4A Division II playoffs and Graham (15-9, 5-4) will be the No. 2 seed. In 4A Division I, Mineral Wells (14-10-1, 6-3) will be the top seed and the Lions will be the second out of District 6.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Noah Gonzalez led off with a walk and Antonio Ybarra followed with a single. A bunt from Austin Pittman resulted in Gonzalez being retired at third base for the first out. Austin Wright was then plunked by a pitch to load the bases, and Robbie Robinson laid down a suicide squeeze that scored Ybarra with the tying run. An RBI single by Jack Field plated Raven Prado, running for Pittman, with the go-ahead as the Lions grabbed a 3-2 edge. Later, during the at-bat of Wyatt Wolf, Pittman came home on a wild pitch for a crucial insurance run that extended the lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mineral Wells’ Devin Russell was hit by a Wright pitch and Hayes Hering singled to start the inning. Wright then fanned Josh Petrie for the first out, while interference from the batter, Owed Gadd, at home plate on a passed ball resulted in the second out. Pinch-hitter Newt Schroeder then delivered a double to left field that plated Russell, but Gonzalez fired to Dario Rodriguez at third base who tagged out Jaidun Fisher, running for Hering, to end the game.
The Lions finished with 11 hits to Mineral Wells’ five as Pittman recorded four, Ybarra tallied three and Wright, Robinson, Field and Gonzalez contributed the others.
On the mound, Wright tossed his second straight complete game, yielding three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Mineral Wells took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as an RBI sacrifice fly by Preston Mendez scored Gadd, who singled to start the frame, and an RBI single by Curry Crouch brought home Mendez, who drew a walk.
The Lions cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fifth as Gonzalez singled with one out, Pittman followed with a two-out base hit, and Wright’s RBI single to left field brought home Gonzalez.
Playoff-bound Brownwood will host Mineral Wells in the regular season finale at 7 p.m. Friday at Morris Southall Field, seeking its first district sweep of the season.
