Let’s talk new head coaches at Howard Payne and Brownwood High School and that should just about kill all the time we have.
At Howard Payne, a young man that I’ve known for several years named Coby Gipson, is the Head Coach. It’s the first time, I think, in his coaching career that he’s ever been at the top of the ladder. He’s spent most of his growing up coaching wise at Howard Payne. He served here and then Lamar University down in Beaumont. He’s had people say some good things about him. The thing I enjoyed more than anything: “Coby and I were on staff together at ETBU.” That’s true he was at ETBU too. “Coby did a tremendous job with his position group. In addition to this, his daily example of Christian servant leadership impacted all he encountered. He is a perfect fit at HPU in my opinion.” That’s Vance Gibson, the former Head Coach at Howard Payne. Well anyway, Coby is a good guy. Everybody will like him that’s supposed to – no, everybody will like him. He’s a good guy and I think a good coach and we’ll find out. September is not too far away and Coby will be ready and he’ll have everybody excited. I think he’s a good coach and a good find.
The other one is at Brownwood High School. His name is Jeryl Brixey. He’s, well he wasn’t well known around here until Friday, and then he got well known. He actually spent, in his young life, five seasons or something like that, at Comanche High School and I don’t think anybody in Brownwood knew him. They do now. He’s spent twelve of the last fifteen years or something like that, as not a head football coach, but at 6A Katy High School. The other six or eight or however many it was, he was THE Offensive Coordinator. One year he was named the Katy ISD Male Sport Assistant Coach of the Year. Anyway, Katy High School has just won and won and won. His team posted a record of 39 and 4 when he was there for a little bit and then he left and came back in 2017. Coach Brixey’s offense elevated the program to even greater heights. They have I think nine State Championships now. One of the great stories in all of Texas. I think they went 14 and 1 and won their last State Championship when he had the guys and they did that in 2020. He brings thirty-three years of experience with him as a varsity football coach including one tenure as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director.
They both have glowing, I mean glowing testimonies. Coaches high school wise and in college have raved and raved about Howard Payne’s new Head Coach, Coby Gipson, and you get dizzy reading the accolades about Jeryl Brixey. It has absolutely nothing to do, nothing to do, with what they are as coaches. That comes when you get all the kids together. They don’t even have all of their assistant coaches yet, but it will happen early on. The kids will either believe it and take to it, or kids won’t believe it and won’t put out as much as they’ve got. I believe this much, I believe that the kids who believe in Coby Gipson will believe in him at the start and it will be up to him to finish the deal. Jeryl Brixey is the same deal. Kids will either believe you or not. I have a feeling they will believe him and work for him and make him a real good coach. His tenure at Brownwood won’t start until August.
I am excited about both of them! I may not live long enough to enjoy either one of them but I sure hope I get to.
Until next time, so long everybody.
