The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets, led by Landon Prestage’s two HR’s, took a 5-4 victory to take the first of a three-game series against Lyon College Saturday afternoon.
Bryant Chambers (1-1) had an amazing day on the mount, pitching a season-high seven strikeouts in 6.1 Innings. He allowed six hits, two runs, with only one being earned. He has solidified a 3.27 ERA through his first two appearances on the year. P. Babcock (0-1) recieved his first loss on the year.
In the batter’s box, Landon Prestage was determined to make an impact for the team’s home-opener for the year, hitting two solo blasts in the 2nd and 6th innings. His third plate appearance saw him reach base on balls, with Prestage making it around the horn for his third score on a John Garza single through the left side. Garza advanced to home plate in the 5th inning via a balk from Babcock.
Entering the top of the 9th, Howard Payne was leading 5-2 with two outs until Lyon’s Ashton Compton blasted a Trevor Rangel fastball in the right field gap for a two RBI double, threatening Howard Payne’s once three-run lead 5-4.
Trevor Rangel eventually calmed the storm and dealt Lyon’s Garrett Graef a line out to the shortstop.
Game two of the three game series begins tomorrow, Sunday, February 23rd. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 P.M.
