I guess it was late evening on Monday when I got the news just like a lot of the people got the news. It was in Brownwoodnews.com and I just kind of didn’t believe what I was reading! I was shocked! On the School Board Agenda was the renewal of contracts recommended by Dr. Young. I think someone asked that Sammy’s be separated out not to renew. They didn’t want to accept Dr. Young’s recommendation and didn’t want Sammy as the head coach any longer. The way it happened in the past was that the coach had a two year contract passed from one contract to the other. It finally just came down to Sammy’s. I sat there and I read it about three times.
Now, Sammy is probably not perfect. But again, I haven’t run into many head football coaches who were. Sammy came here I guess it was in 2018. Anyway he didn’t have a good season to start and didn’t get to .500 until later. His teams have qualified for the playoffs every year.
Drew Huff, I didn’t think was going to be all that great as a Junior, but as a Senior, gosh, he was good. I think it was the last time we beat Stephenville – over there. We were having a laugh party as it was a big Brownwood victory. Then, we got on our way. We figured that night that – we couldn’t see a State Championship necessarily – but we could see being around some kids that could win State. We had finally developed a quarterback that could.
I thought the next hill that we tackled, I wish I could remember the dates for you, was when I got excited when Ike Hall came along. I thought this kid, if he learned how to throw real good who knows, we may have a State Championship out there. So, Ike quarterbacked us through a Junior season which was very beneficial. Then he got his Senior campaign underway and we almost made it. I thought we had it made but we lost in the final seconds.
Both of those were very good teams. So, here we come and we had a little better than nothing. We moved into a new District and here we go again. We weren’t lined up for a good District but we played and didn’t win big.
Sammy has been here at Brownwood High School, which if you don’t know is his alma mater. Sammy loves Brownwood High, maybe more than most people do, and he wanted so bad to lead this team into the playoffs – to continue to lead them until four of the board members decided it was time for Sammy to call it quits at BHS.
I know that Sammy wanted to teach those kids until he couldn’t go any more. He absolutely wanted to coach those kids until he couldn’t coach any more. I was all for it!
Until next time, so long everybody.
