BROCK – Friday night second-half struggles on the road plagued the Brownwood Lady Lions for the second week in a row as, despite just a three-point difference at halftime, the No. 8 Brock Lady Eagles were able to pull away for a 64-41 victory in 6-4A girls basketball action.
Down 12-10 after one quarter and 23-20 at intermission, the Lady Lions (20-9, 2-3) fell into a 43-32 hole after three periods and Brock (19-7, 4-1) owned a 21-9 scoring advantage over the final eight minutes.
“We fought really hard up until about the last four minutes of the game and then they hit about four three-pointers to go from an eight-point game to spreading the gap,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “My kids came in and competed, we made shots when we needed to, but when they hit that run of three-pointers we couldn’t respond to keep it close.
“We talked before the game about how we could run away tonight or we could rise up. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but the team rose up and tonight we showed at times how good this team can be.”
Brownwood shot 29 percent (14 of 48) from the field, 21 percent (4 of 19) from the three-point arc, and 81 percent (9 of 11) at the free throw line, while grabbing 31 rebounds, committing 16 turnovers, and recording only four steals on defense.
Nylah Hall finished with a team-best 17 points for Brownwood while Icess Hall chipped in 12 points despite battling foul trouble. Hannah Deen contributed six points, Jade Morin added four and Trinity Roberts scored two points.
For Brock, Keira Mathews scored a team-high 20 points trailed by 17 from Laney Hudson and 14 from Jacee Riddle.
The Lady Lions open the second half of District 6-4A action at home against Mineral Wells at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. Brownwood won the first league meeting, 45-23, on Jan. 3.
