The Howard Payne women’s basketball team held Concordia University Texas to just 36.2 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 69-57 victory against the Tornados at home Saturday.

The Lady Jackets (1-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Madison Clay, who had 15 points and two steals. Taysie Trejo tacked on 13 points and Azaylee Santos added seven points and three steals.

The Howard Payne offense was impressive from three-point land, pouring in nine threes on 26 attempts. Jazlyn Braithwaite hit two treys for the Lady Jackets in the contest.

Howard Payne’s defense held Concordia to only 36.2 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Jackets also limited Daysha Tijerina to 5-of-17 shooting in the game. The Tornados did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points.

How It Happened

Howard Payne kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 16-13.

Howard Payne then cut the Tornados lead to 27-25 before going on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a three from Trejo, to take a 37-27 lead. The Tornados cut into that lead, but the Lady Jackets still enjoyed a 37-30 advantage heading into halftime. Howard Payne was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 24 points.

After intermission, Howard Payne added to its advantage and owned a 54-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Howard Payne played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.

Howard Payne kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-48 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Briley Waters’ three, to grow the lead to 65-48 with 6:18 to go in the contest. The Tornados narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Jackets still cruised the rest of the way for the 69-57 win. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
