It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved family patriarch, Lesley “Les” Glen Fisher. Les passed away at the age of 87 surrounded by family on Friday, October 25, 2024. He was born in Brady, Texas on February 15, 1937, to Jim and Lois Fisher.
Les grew up in Brady and graduated from Brady High School. He attended Cisco Junior College to pole vault on a track scholarship and also played quarterback for the Wranglers. While in Cisco, he saw “the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen” and soon after married Ann Evetts. He followed Ann to Abilene Christian University where he pole vaulted on another scholarship. Les went into the US Army and they were stationed in Hawaii. After he was discharged from the Army, he was a US Marine Corps Reservist for six years. Les attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and his master’s in interdisciplinary studies. He began his coaching career in Brady and led his team to the playoffs his last year there. Their family had grown by three at this point and the Fishers moved to San Marcos where Les coached defensive backs, helped start the gymnastics program, and coached an Olympic qualifier in pole vaulting as head track coach at Southwest Texas State University. He went on to be the Head Football Coach at San Marcos High School. From there, the family moved to Winters where he was Head Coach and Athletic Director for the high school. Eventually, they settled in Brownwood where he was the Defensive Coordinator for Howard Payne University. He then transitioned into school administration and eventually retired as an Administrator for Brownwood High School. He was then called out of retirement to serve as the Interim Administrator for Early High School and Blanket High School. He was a past member of Texas High School Coaches Association and the Association of Secondary Administrators.
Les grew up learning from his father how to work with concrete and do construction. He flourished as a woodworker and many family members are blessed to have numerous unique furniture pieces handcrafted by him. All three children benefited from his construction skills in all of their homes. Les was a quiet, kind-hearted man with a gentle spirit whose family meant everything to him.
Les and Ann were longtime members of Austin Avenue Church of Christ in Brownwood where he served as a deacon. He served on the Board of the Cherokee Home for Children for many years. He was also a Director for many years at Hansel Christian Camp at Lake Travis.
Les was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by his large and loving family: his children, SiLes (Jon) Langston, Paige (Shane) Britton, and Dusty (Jo Lynn) Fisher; his grandchildren who called him “Dah” or “Dolly”, Tait (Sarah) Langston, Tanner’s wife (Meagan) Langston, Taylor (Drew) Peters, Brooklyn (Reid) Longabaugh, Chandler Britton, Mixon (Bailey) Fisher, Berkeley Britton, and Jaxon Fisher; great grandchildren, Jon Lee and Caroline Langston, Brecken and Mason Langston, Finn Longabaugh, and Cub Peters; his Evetts family by marriage; his brothers, Jimmy (Patsy) Fisher and Elton (Juanita) Fisher; his stepsister, Carolyn Wright; his half-brother, David Fisher; and longtime family friends, the Foresters.
Les is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lois Fisher; his beloved wife of 58 years, Ann Fisher; his grandson, Tanner Langston; his brother, James Fisher; and his sisters, Katherine Geno, Margaret Sheffield, Merle Stanley, and Billie Jean Adams.
