BANGS – The Bangs Dragons came up a few plays shy of completing pre-district action with a winning record, as the Colorado City Wolves spoiled homecoming, 37-36, Friday night.
Down 37-30, the Dragons (2-3) stopped a Colorado City (2-3) drive at the Bangs 22, then drove 78 yards to close the gap to 37-36, but were unable to complete the go-ahead two-point conversion late in the game. The Dragons converted three of five two-point tries on the night.
Despite being unable to pounce on an onside kick, the Dragons got the ball back after forcing a Colorado City punt, which Rex Guerrero returned 20 yards. Bangs advanced to the Wolves 18, but was unable to convert a fourth-and-four with 11 seconds left as Skylar Minshew was pushed out of bounds at the 16.
In a see-saw affair, Bangs trailed 7-0, led 8-7, fell behind 14-8, pulled even at 14, faced a 20-14 hole, grabbed a 22-20 edge, saw Colorado City seize a 26-22 and then 29-22 lead, and rallied for a 30-29 advantage before the Wolves scored their final touchdown, with the decisive extra point.
No statistical information for Bangs was available Saturday.
After a bye next week, the Dragons (2-3) kick off District 5-2A Division I competition at home Oct. 11 against Ballinger (3-2), which fell to Stanton, 25-21, Friday night.
