GATESVILLE – By the narrowest of margins, the Brownwood High tennis team dropped its second straight District 7-4A tennis match Thursday, falling to Gatesville by a 10-9 count.
The Lions and Lady Lions slipped to 1-2 in league play and 4-6 overall with the setback.
Brownwood grabbed the early edge by taking four of the seven doubles matches. Collecting victories were the mixed doubles tandem of Ihana Figueroa and Aiden Opltonik (6-3, 6-3 over Tyson Crawford and D. Clough), the No. 3 girls doubles duo of Kirra Neff and Jami Patterson (7-5, 6-1 over Annabelle Lea and Kim), the No. 2 boys pairing of Wesley Goodrich and Eric Smith (6-4, 6-0 over Ryan Connally and Rogan Smith), and No. 3 boys doubles team of Chance Pinkney and Andre Martinez (6-1, 12-10 over Ian Rainer and Quentin Ivy).
The Lions won five of their six singles matches as victories were claimed by No. 1 Smith (in three sets over Jack Armstrong), No. 3 Blake Hutchins (6-4, 6-1 over Connally), No. 4 Trine Baugh (6-4, 6-4 over Smith), No. 5 Oplotnik (6-1, 6-0 over Crawford), and No. 6 Martinez (6-1, 6-2 over Rainer).
Brownwood wraps up district competition at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 at Stephenville.
