The Class A Division I No. 5 May Tigers will attempt to keep their unblemished mark intact, but the Newcastle Bobcats are looking to do the same in yet another match-up of unbeatens for first-year head coach James Ball’s squad.
The Tigers are coming off an 85-40 home victory over previously unbeaten Rochelle Saturday, a team that had averaged 79.5 points per game coming into the contest.
In the win over Rochelle, May used a balanced attack of 228 rushing yards and 223 passing yards to generate 451 total yards and nine offensive touchdowns – five on the ground and four through the air.
May surrendered 262 yards – with 229 of those yards coming through the air – but scored a defensive touchdown, recorded a safety, and tacked on a special teams score as well.
Ben Harrell completed all three of his pass attempts for 130 yards and three touchdowns, rushed 12 times for 187 yards and three more scores, and pounced on a loose ball in the end zone for another Tiger touchdown.
Cayson Dail connected on all four of his pass attempts for 93 yards with a touchdown, while leading receivers included Brody Stice with two scoring receptions totaling 106 yards, Jackson Lusk with two grabs for 37 yards and a 50-yard kick return for six points, Kaden Watkins with a 39-yard touchdown catch, Wyatt Hardy with a 33-yard scoring reception, and Lane Goodson hauled in an 18-yard reception.
Goodson also rushed for 41 yards and a score, and Kobey Morris tacked on a rushing touchdown and intercepted a pass a defense – one of four takeaways by the Tigers.
Newcastle has started its season with victories over Class A Division II No. 4 Iredell (50-22), Crowell (60-14) and Gold-Burg (72-36).
Players to watch for Newcastle include Ben Burk, Lucas Owen, Jayden Hemby, London Martinez, Mikey Soito, Texas Hammond, Keegan Voyles and Keyton Newland.

Lingleville (0-2) at Zephyr (3-0)

The Zephyr Bulldogs made their season debut in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class A Division II state rankings at No. 9 this week, and look to remain undefeated as they play host the winless Lingleville Cardinals.
Zephyr is coming off a 51-20 road victory over Gorman as the Bulldogs finished with 382 yards – 222 passing and 160 rushing – while allowing 191 yards – 117 on the ground and 74 through the air.
Wyatt Stevens completed 9 of 10 passes for 222 yards and five touchdowns, as Reese Hamm caught three passes – all touchdowns – totaling 134 yards. CJ Byers added three grabs for 34 yards, Corben Gosnell hauled in a 29-yard scoring reception, and Ethan Byers scored on a 2-yard toss.
Chayden Woodcock paced the ground game with 106 yards and two rushing scores, and he also caught a 23-yard pass. CJ Byers tacked on 45 yards on the ground and Stevens added 18.
Defensively, Woodcock’s 13 tackles were a team-high followed by Stevens with 10, Gosnell with nine, Hamm and Trapper Schoenhals with eight each, and Johnny Paul Evans-Rollins with seven takedowns.
Lingleville’s season has started with losses to Rising Star, 20-0, and Kopperl, 48-0.
Players to watch for the Cardinals include Jorge Toledo, Cruz Alarcon, Hudson Guajardo, Joe Dominguez, Wyatt Ray, Austin Kelley, Klayson Guajardo, Reid Cogburn, Elias Tovat, and Simon Dominguez.

Santa Anna (2-1) at Blanket (2-0)

With a change in the day and location of the game due to a referee shortage, the Blanket Tigers will attempt to remain undefeated as the Santa Anna Mountaineers come to town.
Blanket has yet to yield a point this season with wins over Cranfills Gap, 60-0, and Evant, 54-0.
In last week’s win over Evant, the Tigers finished with 231 yards of total offense – 187 rushing and 44 passing – and also scored on special teams.
Cameron Aultman anchored the ground game with 130 rushing yards and four touchdowns while Kannon Kensing chipped in 57 yards on the ground with a trip to the end zone.
Dallas Shumaker completed 3 of 5 passes for 44 yards with a 22-yard scoring strike to Kade Russell. Shumaker also returned a kick 64 yards for a touchdown, and tossed a pair of completions to Mason Beck covering 22 yards.
Defensively, Beck led the way with 10 tackles followed by Kensing with six tackles and a fumble recovery, Aultman with five tackles, and Brian Shannon with four tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries
Santa Anna is coming off a 69-24 win at Ranger last week as the Mountaineers rushed for 441 of its 447 yards of total offense, led by William Perry with 360 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, covering 46, 62, 51, 36, 27, 46 and 29 yards.
Wyatt Strickland chipped in 75 rushing yards and scored twice on carries of 3 and 10 yards. Jayden Gibson added 6 yards on the ground and caught a 4-yard pass from Brown.
Defensively, Santa Anna was led by Brown with 19 tackles, including two for loss; 14 by Perry, with four for loss; and 10 by Strickland, who also recovered three fumbles and returned one 29 yards for a touchdowns, while a picking off a pass as well.
These two teams met in Santa Anna last year, with the Mountaineers picking up a 59-38 victory.

Two teams who have bounced back nicely from season-opening defeats clash Friday night as the Comanche Indians and Tolar Rattlers both target a third straight victory.
Since dropping its opener to Poth, 35-14, Comanche has followed with wins over Llano, 34-21, and Eastland, 36-14.
In the win over Eastland, Comanche generated 399 yards of total offense – 222 on the ground and 177 through the air.
Quarterback Cayden Davis completed 8 of 16 passes for 177 yards with four scoring tosses and added 53 yards on the ground.
CT Buford caught four passes for 115 yards and scored twice, Chance Boswell finished with two receptions for 20 yards and a trip to the end zone, and Manuel Ortiz hauled in a 20-yard touchdown catch.
On the ground, Ladanian Smith led the charge with 140 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Zaden Tello recorded 11 tackles, including four sacks, while Alex Terrell also tallied 11 tackle and recovered a fumble. Junior Gomez and JJ Davis also finished the game with 11 tackles.
Tolar was dealt a 10-0 loss by Peaster to kick off 2024, but has answered with wins over Teague, 23-21, and Millsap, 36-20.
In the victory over Millsap, the Rattlers finished with 305 yards of total offense – 188 passing and 117 rushing.
Briton Rice completed 8 of 13 passes for 188 yards and three scoring tosses – one to Brylen Feist, who caught three passes for 82 yards; one to Dacen Watkins, who finished with two grabs for 42 yards; and a 45-yarder to Anson Laminack.
On the ground, Peyton Brown rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive standouts included Cash Clark and Hunter Michaels with 10 tackles apiece, while Brooks Stone recovered a fumble.

Seeking their first victory of the season, the Coleman Bluecats welcome the Cisco Loboes to Hufford Field for homecoming Friday night.
Ranked No. 18 in Class 2A Division I in the preseason, Coleman’s campaign has started with losses to Eastland, 21-6, Clifton, 33-12, and Mason, 53-6.
Against Mason last week, Coleman was limited to just 218 yards – 182 passing and 36 rushing – while giving up 375 yards – 218 on the ground and 157 through the air.
Brayden Torres completed 9 of 26 passes for Coleman for 182 yards as Kelan Sikes hauled in a 71-yard scoring reception and Braylon Stewart led the team with three grabs for 44 yards. Paul Salas was the top rusher for the Bluecats with 20 yards on six carries.
Defensively for Coleman, Easton Meador tallied a team-high six tackles followed by five each from Salas, Brooks Clippinger and Micah Lackey.
Cisco’s season has featured a 43-42 overtime loss to Clyde in the opener, followed by wins over San Angelo TLCA, 62-8, and Breckenridge, 30-20.
Julius Proffitt has passed for 441 yards and nine touchdowns for the Loboes, while leading receivers include Laike Kennedy (10-224, 7 TDs), Jaden White (5-64, TD), and Dillon Silva (3-49). On the ground, Silva (185 yards, TD), Proffitt (147 yards, 5 TDs) and Cody Gayle (108 yards, TD) lead the charge.

The San Saba Armadillos survived the 107th Battle of the River last week and notched a 20-12 win over the rival Goldthwaite Eagles, and look to keep Waco Reicher winless Friday night.
In last week’s victory, San Saba manufactured 302 yards of total offense – 192 rushing and 110 passing – while giving up 270 yards – 216 on the ground and 54 through the air – with one takeaway.
Quarterback Luke Tharp again led the ‘Dillo charge with 185 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while completing 10 of 15 passes for 110 yards and another score.
Kaylub Roberts hauled in a 34-yard touchdown reception for San Saba, while Trace Temples led the way with three grabs for 32 yards and Skylar Romero chipped in an 18-yard catch.
Defensively for San Saba, Jason Everett led the way with 14 tackles followed by 11 from Sterling Proffitt and 10 from Levi Glover, who recovered a fumble. Cash Bryant added an interception and three tackles.
Waco Reicher’s season has featured losses to the China Spring CenTex Sports Association Outlaws, 42-15, Tomball Rosehill Christian, 41-8, and Rio Vista, 62-0.
In the loss to Rio Vista, Reicher managed just 96 yards of total offense – all on the ground – while giving up 361 yards – 282 rushing and 79 passing. Reicher also turned over the ball twice.
Players to watch for Reicher are linebacker Cadyn Cash, running back TJ Bradley, receiver Emmitt Rodriguez, and quarterback Wyatt Brown.
There is no projection for this game by Harris Ratings Weekly as Reicher is not a UIL school, but Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists San Saba as an 18-point favorite.

7 p.m. Friday at Snyder
The Cross Plains Buffaloes will attempt to rebound from their first setback this season as they battle the Tahoka Bulldogs in a neutral site contest at Snyder’s Grant Teaff Tiger Stadium.
Cross Plains started the year with wins over Haskell, 24-22, and Abilene TLCA, 62-8, before being derailed by Hico, 42-14.
Tahoka defeated San Angelo TLCA, 54-0, in its opener, fell to Sudan, 67-60, and bounced back with a 48-19 victory over Colorado City last week.
In the loss to Hico last week, the Buffaloes were held to 248 yards – 133 rushing and 115 passing – while surrendering 439 yards, including 364 on the ground.
Kade Purvis completed 9 of 15 passes for Cross Plains as Gray Albrecht led the receiving corps with three grabs for 59 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Hopkins anchored the ground game with 59 yards followed by Purvis with 37. Ryder Reed caught two passes for 24 yards, while Rylen Reed added a 26-yard reception.
On defense for Cross Plains, Bryson Barron finished with 11 tackles and one for loss, trailed by Colt Sanderson with 10 tackles and one behind the line of scrimmage, Jessey Bradford with nine, Albrecht and Cullen Ellis with eight each, Purvis and Tyler Mackey with seven apiece, and Colter Wedeking with six tackles.
Tahoka quarterback Brogan Stone has thrown for 700 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions thus far, and Ruben Arguello leads the way with 15 catches for 421 yards and four scores. On the ground, Jordan Martinez has amassed 490 yards and two touchdowns.
Steven Hernandez leads the Bulldog defense with 33 tackles and two fumble recoveries followed by Jordan Hicks with 26 tackles, Cayden Gutierrez with 25 and Benny Arguello with 20.

Richland Springs (3-0) at Burkeville (1-1)

The Class A Division II No. 2 Richland Springs Coyotes for the second year in a row make the 712-mile round trip the Burkeville to face a Mustangs squad still in search on its first win on the field.
The Coyotes have hammered Leakey Big Springs Charter, 56-0, Bryan St. Joseph, 62-15, and Nueces Canyon, 57-0, to kick start their campaign, while Burkeville has fallen to Oakwood, 58-19, after picking up a forfeit victory over Athens Christian.
In last week’s win over Nueces Canyon, Richland Springs produced 223 yards of total offense – 181 on the ground and 42 through the air.
Cohen Ethridge rushed for 68 yards and two scores, Billy Perry tacked on 62 yards and a touchdown, and Gage Behrens tallied 21 yards and scored twice.
Through the air, Perry completed 2 of 5 passes for 42 yards with a 39-yard touchdown to Hutton Rogers.
Defensively, the Coyotes scored on a 57-yard fumble return by Behrens and a 37-yard interception return by EJ Aviles.

The Class A Division II No. 6 Sidney Eagles set their sights on a third consecutive victory, but the unbeaten Bluff Dale stand in the way.
Since falling to May, 51-0, in the season opener, Sidney has reeled off victories over Eden, 26-25, and Stephenville Faith, 58-12.
Bluff Dale has started its campaign with wins over Throckmorton, 46-0, Brookesmith, 32-20, and Covington, 57-43.
In Sidney’s win over Stephenville Faith last week, the Eagles finished with 338 yards total yards – 256 rushing with six touchdowns and 82 yards through the air.
Rees Miller rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns, caught a 14-yard pass and threw a 5-yard touchdown. Dylan Terpstra caught three passes for 37 yards with two trips to the end zone, while Jeremiah McDaniel tacked on 81 rushing yards and a touchdown and passed for 32 yards and another score. Lehman Lindeque rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown and caught a 22-yard pass, while Ethan Scantling threw for 43 yards and rushed for 34 yards.

The Rising Star Wildcats have experienced a see-saw start to the season, and look to return to the win column against the Paint Rock Indians, who have yet to enjoy a victory in 2024.
Rising Star dropped its opener to Leakey, 59-14, rebounded by defeating Lingleville, 20-0, then fell to Perrin-Whitt, 70-22, last week.
Paint Rock has been defeated by Eden, 58-12, and Loraine, 52-6.
Against Perrin-Whitt last week, Rising Star’s Manning Miller was 12 of 22 through the air for 188 yards and two touchdowns, completing passes to seven different receivers. Miller also rushed for 67 yards.
Anthony Pollard led the team with five catches for 51 yards, Pepe Bocanegra added four grabs for 95 yards, Emerson Helmuth hauled in a 30-yard scoring reception, and Kason McGinn recorded a 4-yard touchdown catch.
Payton McGinn added a rushing touchdown for the Wildcats.
Defensively, Miller and Kason McGinn both tallied nine tackles, and Miller recovered a fumble. Payton McGinn finished with six tackles, including three for loss, and Helmuth and Pollard collected five tackles apiece.

The Mullin Bulldogs will attempt to even their season record at 2-2 as they welcome the Moran Bulldogs, who look to halt a two-game skid.
Mullin was dealt a 52-7 loss by Menard last week, but the week prior in a 47-0 victory over Panther Creek the Bulldogs generated 226 total yards – 144 rushing and 82 passing – while the defense created four turnovers.
Dameon Gonzales compiled 69 yards on the ground and scored twice, Mani Morales rushed for 40 yards and two touchdowns, and Vash Langford added 35 yards rushing and one score.
Vash Langford also completed 6 of 11 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Gonzales hauled in two catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, and Jaiden Langford contributed a 10-yard catch.
Defensively, Jonathan Armendarez recovered three fumbles, Morales returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and Landon Romero led the way with eight tackles.
Moran’s season has featured a 55-16 win over Lueders-Avoca, followed by losses to Paint Creek, 52-24, and Brookesmith, 55-6.
Last week against Brookesmith, Moran allowed 372 yards, including 292 rushing, and gave up touchdowns of 73 and 51 yards on kick returns.

The Priddy Pirates will try again for their first win of the season, while also attempting to hand the Gustine Tigers their first loss.
Priddy has fallen to Walnut Springs, 69-22, and Trent, 43-34, while Gustine has knocked off Paint Creek, 58-30, and Buckholts, 70-20.
In last week’s loss to Priddy, the Pirates received 255 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Brody Strew, 70 rushing yards and a score from Catfish Baird, and 41 rushing yards from Wyatt Frazier.
