Elsie Jean (Miners) Anderson died on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at home surrounded by family. She was 93 years old.
Elsie was born on the 4th of July, 1931, in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to English settlers William James and Winifred Ethel (Lowe) Miners. She loved education, and when she learned 1+1=2, she knew she would be a math teacher. She taught at girls’ schools in Rhodesia and London.
She met her future husband, Larry Anderson, when he was on leave from the Army. They met on a train in the U.K., then wrote each other for five years after which she came to the Texas to marry him on December 22, 1961.
Elsie taught at a variety of schools including Desdemona High School, and she retired as a math professor at Western Texas College in Snyder.
She was very generous with her time, energy, and money. She supported a wide variety of community efforts, missionaries, disaster responses, churches and charities. She also led Girl Scout Troops.
Elsie had a strong Christian witness early in life. She accepted Christ during Scripture Union classes in school in Rhodesia, then introduced her sisters to Christ. Many family generations have been blessed by her faith.
She loved traveling, walking, working puzzles (crosswords and sudoku), playing racquetball, and competitive swimming. She helped train one of her sisters who was an Olympic swimmer.
Elsie is predeceased by parents and sister Margaret Fourie. She is survived by husband Larry V. Anderson, daughters Winifred Jean Whitmore and Margaret Elizabeth Daly, sister Betty Ressell, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
