The Texas Department of Public Safety released the following information Friday morning regarding a one-vehicle rollover accident that claimed one life.
A 16-year juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:51 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Mitchell Jacobson. Several sources have confirmed the individual who passed was Serenity New, 16, a Brownwood High School student and cheerleader.
Two other teenagers, 16 and 17 years old, were also in the vehicle and suffered non-incapacitating injuries. The 17-year-old was transported by Lifeguard EMS to Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood. The 16-year-old was transported from the scene by private vehicle.
According to the DPS report, the preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Toyota 4-Runner sports utility vehicle was traveling south on CR 225, five miles south of Brownwood. The driver was operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed and unsafe for the roadway conditions. The posted speed limit was 60 mph. The driver lost control causing the SUV to go into a side skid off the east side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on its wheels.
All three passengers were wearing seat belts, according to the DPS report.
