Dave Campbell’s Texas Football recently revealed its list of the Top 25 district high school football games for the 2024 campaign, and two Brown County schools made an appearance.
At No. 8 on the list is the 84th Battle of 377 between the Brownwood Lions and Stephenville Yellow Jackets, which will be played Nov. 1 at Tarleton. The game is once again a district rivalry that will likely decide which team prevails in 4-4A Division I.
The Lions are ranked No. 7 in the 4A Division I preseason poll by DCTF, while the Yellow Jackets own the publication’s No. 1 rating.
Stephenville won last year’s contest, 27-17, and has come out on top in the last four meetings – equaling the longest string of victories for the Yellow Jackets in the series history.
Brownwood possess a 47-34-2 record all-time against Stephenville, and went 25 games without a loss from 1964-1989.
Landing at No. 14 in the DCTF list of Top 25 district games are the May Tigers, who will be hosting the Jonesboro Eagles on Nov. 8 in a game that could determine the District 14-A Division I championship.
May enters the season ranked No. 8 in the DCTF Class A Division I preseason poll as the Tigers are preparing for their first season under new head coach James Ball.
Meanwhile, Jonesboro landed at No. 5 in the preseason rankings, and have defeated May in district action the past two seasons. The Tigers’ last victory over the Eagles occurred in 2021.
Preseason football practices begin Monday, Aug. 5, with the opening weekend of the regular season slated for Aug. 29-31.
