Forty wins and forty losses. In baseball it’s midseason or thereabouts. We’re talking about my Houston Astros here. I have to give a little bit of leeway here to be sure that I’m safe. OK, I’m not safe but I’m just trying to make myself feel good about the Astros.
Forty wins and forty losses is not that good, unless you’re talking about the Astros. I consider them to be my team so I’ve been hunting a .500 record for, well, take it back to April. It’s unbelievable what this team has gone through. They have gone through everything you can possibly imagine – injuries and everything else. Forty wins and forty losses may not seem like a big deal but, it is. Forty wins and forty losses, I thought really from the time they lost four straight to the Yankees to open the season, and they were down as much as ten games or so to the Seattle Mariners and I kept thinking with a new manager and new coaches, well there was just too much stuff going on. They got in deep trouble. I mean deep trouble! Fact is, I thought before the first month was over they were going to be out of it, but they have rallied and they have
come back. They were ten games out and now they are four and a half down. They were last place in the league and now all of a sudden they are in second place with no one between them and Seattle. When they went on a hot streak Seattle went on a cold one. One other team needs to be mentioned, the Texas Rangers. They did it last year, why not again. Especially if they get all their pitching back again.
Houston has three rookie pitchers that are starting for them and they should not be. They just got two All-Stars taken out of the starting lineups and they should be back soon. Playoffs? You say that’s crazy. Most normal people would tell you that’s exactly right but I’m still picking them. Houston, I think, makes a run – makes a real good run!
Forty wins and forty losses on this day in late June. Forty wins and forty losses.
If Houston backs up after the All Star break, they definitely won’t make the playoffs, but if they hunker down, if they play hard, if they play strong, this could be one of the most amazing turn-arounds in pro baseball history. Or maybe not.
Until next time, so long everybody.
