In honor of Juneteenth, the Brownwood Art Center, 215 Fisk St., is hosting a gumbo and jambalaya meal this Wed. June 19, from 5-7 pm.  The meal includes sides, water, and a dessert, for $10, payable at the door.  Cash, check, or cards will be accepted.  Proceeds from this event will be gifted to the Hardin School revitalization efforts.

In addition, at 5:30 the winners will be announced for the coloring contest, which was held for kids up to age 14.  The coloring sheets, created by Brownwood Art Association member Brenda Shaw, featured Black civic and cultural leaders from Brownwood, including Cecil Holman, Rufus Hardin, Carol Spratt, and Walt Williams.

Guests will also have an opportunity to meet Austin artist Phokus, who is featured in the Juneteenth exhibit at the Art Center.  His biography states that his work is “a visceral response to his Southern cultivation as well as his investigations of anthropology, metaphysics, historians, music, mythology and mysticism.”   The title of his show is “I can see the darkness in me, and it’s quite amazing.”
