The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council on Tuesday adopted a new postseason format for Class 6A-1A girls and boys basketball, Class 6A-2A volleyball, Class 6A-2A baseball and softball, and Class 6A-4A girls and boys soccer that will result in two state champions in each classification beginning with the upcoming 2024-25 school year.
The plan mirrors the current Class 6A football playoff format, which was once followed by Class 5A and smaller schools. Four teams will continue to advance to the postseason in each of the aforementioned sports, but the two schools with the largest enrollments will compete in Division I, and the two schools with the smallest enrollments compete in Division II – thus resulting in multiple state champions in each classification.
Class 1A baseball, softball and volleyball will remain with their current postseason formats, as will Class 5A-1A football.
