A hair and eye lashes salon, spray tans, teeth whitening, clothing and a hat bar – all with a family feel – are inside the four walls of Copper Brand Salon and Boutique, which will hold its grand opening Saturday, June 1.
Mikka Gregory and daughter-in-law Micaela Gregory combined their two businesses, and added a shopping component, in coming up with the idea for Copper Brand.
“I started bleaching teeth in 2020 and Micaela went to cosmetology school right out of high school in 2018,” Mikka said. “We were talking one day and thought as much as we shop, and as much as we’re into retail, why don’t we put both of our rent checks into something for ourselves?”
The unfortunate closing of Saturdays, formerly an antique store housed at the same location, led to the perfect opportunity for Copper Brand.
“We looked around for a year and never could find anything,” Micaela said. “What we were looking for and planning to do expanded as we went. It just kept growing and we kept adding to it.”
The clothing portion of the store was modeled after Maverick Fine Western Wear in the Fort Worth Stockyards, according to Mikka.
“They have a little athletic wear, a little western flare, but anybody can go in there and shop,” Mikka said. “That was my vision a little bit. We didn’t want it to be unapproachable fancy, and our price point is very reasonable.”
Micaela added, “There’s a happy medium. We have items that are inexpensive and some that are higher end. And we’ve tried to mix styles. We offer multiple styles for multiple body types. You have a lot of options from dressing up to dressing comfy.”
Mikka continued, “And it’s not just for 19-year-olds or not just for 75-year-olds.”
Copper Brand will also offer authentic Shoshone Indian jewelry as well.
“There’s a lady that is a Shoshone Indian and she was raised on a reservation and she does all our beaded jewelry,” Mikka said. “We’re the only ones around that carry actual Shoshone jewelry.”
While currently Copper Brand offers only women’s clothing, the plan is to add men’s clothes in the future. And while the hair salon, spray tanning and teeth whitening typically appeal more to women, men and children are encouraged to tag along.
“It’s really family oriented and we want everyone to feel comfortable with shopping,” Micaela said.
Mikka added, “We have TVs and drinks in the back for husbands and kids, and a chair up front to relax if you’re not shopping.”
The family feel of Copper Brand extends beyond the shopping experience.
“Everything in here is farm-related,” Mikka said. “Our guys did 90 percent of the work. They built the walls for the dressing room in the barn and brought it down here and put it together. We have a rack with irrigation wire from the pumps that hook up to our irrigation wells. Even the Copper Brand came from our Hereford bulls. That’s where we got our logo, and Herefords are technically a copper color.”
Looking to the future, thoughts of expansion are already in the works if business booms in downtown Brownwood.
“We hope to be here a while and hope we can grow it, both the salon and the store,” Mikka said. “In a perfect world, in five years we’d have a warehouse.”
Located at 410 Center Avenue, the site of the former Saturdays, hours for Copper Brand are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Copper Brand offers Facebook Live posts at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the store is closed Sunday and Monday.
