How it started and where we are today. After receiving its charter, American Legion Post #196, would be called the Isham A. Smith and Scott Brothers American Legion Post. The Scott Brothers were from Brownwood, Texas and they both served during World War II. Lt. Colonel Churchill L. Scott Jr. was born on January 29th, 1915. He was a B-17 pilot in World War ll who occasionally flew combat missions in other air crew positions to better understand the challenges they faced on missions. On August 12,1943, Lt. Colonel Scott was flying in the tail gunner position on a B-17 named “We Ain’t Scared”. When the aircraft was shot down over Belgium returning from a mission into Germany.
First Lieutenant James F. Scott was born on August 8th, 1920. He was a fighter pilot in World War II and flew the P-51B. On June 8th, 1944, Lt. Scott was flying his P-51B near LeMans, France when it collided mid-air with another P-51B. Both Lt. Colonel Churchill Scott Jr. and Lt. James Scott paid the ultimate sacrifice
for their service in World War ll.
