AUSTIN – Competing in a pair of events at the UIL Class 3A Track and Field State Championships Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, Early High School claimed a fifth-place and eighth-place finish.
Longhorn junior Camden Myers came in fifth in the UIL Class 3A boys high jump as he cleared 5-10, 6 feet and 6-2 on his first efforts, but was unable to advance at the 6-4 height. Myers – the Region I-3A runner-up – reached the state meet by clearing 6-2 in Abilene as well.
Kameron Plyler of Vernon won the state championship with a high mark of 6-6 followed by silver medalist Joshua Cornelius of San Antonio Great Hearts Northern Oaks (6-5) and bronze medalist Devyn Hidrogo of Franklin (6-5).
Lady Horn freshman Jaime Vassar placed eighth in the 3A girls shot put with a best effort of 37-7 on her next to last attempt. Vassar – the Region I-3A runner-up – broke the school record with a 40-9.5 performance in Abilene to qualify.
Olivia Hildebrand of Whitesboro won the state championship with a 40-10.25 performance trailed by silver medalist Bree Lewis of Coahoma with a 40-8.75 and bronze medalist Landrie Valenzuela of Jacksboro with a 40-7.
