KINGSLAND – At the midway point of the State Preview golf tournament at Legends Golf Course, the Brownwood Lions own a two-stroke lead over the nearest competitor.
On Friday, the Lions fired a season-best round of 296 at the site of this year’s state tournament, which will be held April 29-30. Bridgeport, with a 298, and 2023 Class 4A state runner-up and Region I-4A champion Andrews, with a 299, were the only other schools to crack 300 on day one. All three of those teams compete in Region I-4A this year.
Leading the charge for Brownwood was Sir Bubba Jones as he carded a 66 – five shots better than any other golfer in the field, including 2023 Class 4A state champion Jaxon Donaldson of Wimberley, who was second with a round of 71.
Caleb Modawell was tied for fifth place overall after a round of 73, Hudson Reagan was 10th with a 74, Peyton Sharp and Will Stewardson were tied for 45th place after shooting 83s, and Cobe Walker was 50th with a round of 84.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament will conclude Saturday.
