The Brownwood Library is thrilled to announce Carmaleta Felton will chair the 2nd Annual Kentucky Derby Watch Party on May 4th. Last year’s Kentucky Derby Party was a great success and sold out in record time. This year the event will move to the Brownwood Coliseum. The library anticipates an extraordinary gathering with limited seats available.

Mrs. Felton resides in Brownwood with her husband, Otis Felton. They are grateful to the Brownwood community for their support of Brownwood’s non-profit library. Mrs. Felton has had a long career of volunteering as Chair to raise funds for Dallas charities. For her extraordinary community contributions, Mrs. Felton was named 2017 Dallas Woman of the Year.

Joining Mrs. Felton as Co-Chair is Dr. Amber Shugrue. Dr. Shugrue, a native of West Texas, completed her medical education and training in Fort Worth. She moved to Brownwood in 2010 and has devoted her career to serving the Brownwood community as a practicing internal medicine physician. Amber is married to Shawn Shugrue, and they have three amazing children. Currently, she is in her sixth year of service on the board of the library and is thrilled to raise funds for the library.

“Words  could never express the amount of gratitude and appreciation we have for our supporters who share our vision and see the potential impact we  make in all corners of our community,” said Mrs. Felton  “We believe in the power of education and with the level of support we receive from the Brownwood community, we are able to continue making a difference for those seeking educational opportunities in  our community.”

Mrs. Sue and Dr. Tom Byrd will serve as honorary co-chairs. Their enduring support for Brownwood has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of our community.

A big coup for the Derby party is securing The Turtle Restaurant featured as the Derby Party mixologist presenting their famous southern mint juleps. In addition to The Turtle libations, the derby party will include a southern buffet featuring fried chicken and honey cured ham catered by Sodexo.  The Jim Bode Jazz Band from Abilene will provide the  music.  Joe Sheppard will again provide the floral décor.

Silent and live auction packages will feature local merchant donations as well as vacation destination packages. Rex Tackett will serve as live Auctioneer again this year. The event will also feature a hat and a bow tie contest. Judges will be announced soon.

Funds raised from the event will benefit the Brownwood  Library’s education and community programs including:

  1. Summer youth programs that are open to all children. These programs are vital as they promote brain development and provide a brighter future for more opportunities.
  2. Literacy reading classes specially designed for children.
  3. Funds will also go to long-needed building repair and landscaping.

Underwriting opportunities range from $1,000 to $5,000, with individual tables starting at $1,000.

For sponsor  information contact Carmaleta Felton at [email protected]. Tickets can also be purchased at the library.
