LLANO – Leading by a pair of runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Brownwood Lady Lions surrendered three and suffered their first loss of the season, 8-7 to Llano Friday in the first road outing of the year.
Brownwood (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Llano drew even at 1 in the bottom of the fourth and the Lady Lions regained a 2-1 edge in the fifth. Llano scratched across two runs in the bottom of the fourth for its first lead, 3-2, but the Lady Lions grabbed a 4-3 advantage in the top of the fifth, only for Llano to again rally for a 5-4 edge. Brownwood pushed three runs across the board in the top of the seventh to seize a 7-5 lead, but was unable to close out the win.
The Lady Lions generated 13 hits – two each by Carlee Burks, Jeniffer Romero, Peyton Pena, Jakayla Peek and Maitlyn Esquivel, and one apiece from Lila Mares, Tynlea Wilson and Mykaela Mendoza. Pena and Peek finished with two RBIs apiece followed by Burks, Romero and Mendoza with one each.
In the circle, Wilson allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and eight walks as she went the distance.
Brownwood is back in action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Merkel.
