After over ten hours of deliberation, a McCulloch County jury found Nicholas Miller guilty of starting the fire that almost destroyed the Mason County Courthouse in February, 2021, on Monday night.
Jury selection was held last week at the Brady Civic Center, with six men and six women selected to hear the case. The trial began Tuesday at the McCulloch County Courthouse. At the start of the trial, District Attorney Tonya Ahlschwede indicated the trial would take about six days to complete.
Miller was charged with several different specific crimes, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, entering a building unlawfully, intent to destroy a habitation and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. While Miller pled guilty to those lesser charges, he did not plead quilty to the more serious charge of causing the fire that consumed the Courthouse.
Miller was arrested near Waco on February 5th, 2021, and has spent most the time since then in the McCulloch County Jail awaiting trial.
Sentencing should begin on Tuesday.
