The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team shot a season-low 38.4% from the field in a 99-73 home loss to McMurry University on Thursday, January 25th.
The Yellow Jackets were able to take control of the paint in the 1st half scoring 22 points in the paint versus only 12 from the War Hawks. Chase Glasper provided a huge spark off the bench scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds, four offensive. McMurry came out hot from behind the arc as the knocked down nine threes in the 1st half to take a 45-39 lead heading in to the break. McMurry made a point to take control inside in the 2nd half putting up 34 points in the paint. Howard Payne continued to struggle from the field going 3-14 from deep in the last 20 minutes. HPU could not mount a comeback, ultimately losing to the War Hawks 99-73. The Yellow Jackets won the turnover battle with McMurry committing 17 turnovers, but only converted them into 15 points. McMurry outrebounded HPU 48-42 including ten offensive rebounds. Luke Whidbee led the way for the Jackets pulling down a career-high twelve rebounds. HPU shot a season-low 38.4% (28-73) from the field and only converted on six of their 29 attempts from deep. McMurry finished 53.3% (40-75) and knocked down 15 treys as well. The Yellow Jackets were led by 19 points from Jarod Johnson and 12 from Armonie Ramey. Riley Fornerette finished with nine along with Luke Whidbee scoring nine points to go along with 12 rebounds. Leading the way for the War Hawks was Matt Pena with 21 points going 7-10 from the three-point line. CJ LeBlanc followed behind with 15 points and eight assists. The Yellow Jackets will have a quick turnaround as they take on Hardin-Simmons at home on Saturday, January 27th with tip-off set for 3:00 PM. {Story by HPUSports.com}
