Betty Rae, born Elizabeth Ann Newberry, died at age 84 in Pecan Bayou Nursing Home in Brownwood, Texas.
Betty was the heart and soul of her family. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Charlie Rae, for 51 years. Together they raised four children to be Jesus loving, hardworking, and family centered. Betty loved to make home cooked meals and took care of the family home. She always opened their home up to many friends that came along with raising four kids, many of them considering Betty as their second mom. Betty’s legacy was being a wonderful stay at home mother, but through the years she did some work outside the home. She worked as a cashier at Shoppin’ Basket and worked at the Mozelle school as a bus driver and teacher’s aide. Betty loved to sew for many years and made countless numbers of clothes for her two daughters, along with their treasured barbie and baby dolls. As her children began to get older and leave the nest, she got into crafting for flea markets and loved a good day of “goin junkin’”. Betty and Charlie attended many sporting events while raising children and later became big fans of horse racing. However, their biggest love was dancing. They met at a dance in 1960 and continued to enjoy dancing for over 50 years. Their love of country music was passed down to their four children, and later grandchildren, who all love a good band with a fiddle. Betty raised her children with a strong, motherly faith. She took her children to church and trusted Jesus to bring them home safely to her every night.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Rae, mother and stepfather, Albert and Carrie Perry, and one brother, Harold Newberry.
Betty is survived by her four children, Carrie, Becky, Rex and wife Danette, and Fuzz and wife Julie. She leaves behind seven beautiful grandchildren, Jacy and husband Jacob Rangel, Jett Allen and partner Kameron, Jordan, Paisley, Brynley, George, and Jim Charlie Rae. And two great grandsons Jaeden and Jaxtyn Rangel.
The family will have a graveside service at Gouldbusk Cemetery Pavilion on Monday, January 22, 2024, at two o’clock in the afternoon with Tip Matthews officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in her memory to the Gouldbusk Cemetery Association, 501 County Road 307, Gouldbusk, Texas 76845.
