The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Wednesday:
On Saturday, January 6, 2024, at approximately 4:20 p.m. Communications received a report from a citizen who advised that he picked up a pedestrian in the 1000blk of Coggin Ave who claimed he was being chased.
The pedestrian was contacted in the 1000 block of Coggin Ave., and he informed officers of his encounter with the suspect. The pedestrian described the suspect to officers who then relayed that information to other officers in the area.
The pedestrian explained that the suspect approached him on Durham Ave. and identified himself as a police officer and then pulled a knife on him as if to attack. The victim feared being stabbed as the suspect ran toward him so he fled the scene on foot.
Officer Logan Humphries drove to the location where the suspect was last seen and observed him further down Coggin Ave. in the 1300 block. As Officer Humphries was opening the door to his patrol vehicle, the suspect suddenly ran toward him aggressively and pulled the driver’s door open as if to fight. Officer Humphries exited the vehicle as the suspect moved into a fighting stance and took him to the ground. The suspect was held there until other officers arrived on scene to take him into custody.
The suspect was identified as 62-year-old Joe Alfonso Martinez of Lamesa, Texas. Martinez appeared to be under the influence of some type of substance as he continued to yell at officers and yell as imaginary people within the block. AMR Ambulance service was contacted to check on him but he refused any assistance.
Martinez was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication, Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1, Resisting Arrest/Detention, Aggravated Assault w/a Deadly Weapon, Impersonating a Public Servant and a county warrant for traffic violations.
