Ben Earl Evans, age 88, passed from this life on Friday, October 27th. Born December 5, 1934, at Lake Brownwood, he passed in Brownwood, at his residence in Redstone Park Assisted Living. Born to Oral Paul Evans and Lorene Lois Baugh Evans, he was married to Iva Nell Mulkey Evans in Denton, Texas on August 27, 1955, their union lasting over 67 years. Ben retired from 3M after 31 years of employment.
Ben, along with his wife Iva Nell were faithful, active members of the First Baptist Church, Brownwood for almost 40 years. He faithfully served as a Deacon and Usher, often known as the “Candy Man” when he would hand attendees and kids a Wintergreen Lifesaver as they entered the sanctuary. Ben was a member of the Lake Brownwood Dam Volunteer Fire Department and was known to enjoy getting stuff accomplished in the “background.”
Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Nell (Mulkey) Evans, daughter Melanie Jennings, his parents Oral and Lorene Evans; his siblings, Fred Evans, Audrey Palmer, Tess Ferguson, Elna Clark, and Terry Evans.
Ben is survived by his sons Brian Earl Evans (Lynelle) of Lampasas, Brent Eric Evans (Jill) of Brownwood, Barri Oral Evans (Kim) of Midland, and son-in-law from Melanie, Dennis Wayne Jennings (Jana) of Springfield, Missouri. Ben had nine grandchildren Ben Jennings (Megan) of Findley, Ohio, Erin Evans of Cameron, Texas, Shad Jennings (Rachael) of Springfield, Missouri, Dexter Evans (Meggie) of Dallas, Erica Evans Whitaker (Josh) of Louisville, Kentucky, Michelle Evans-Cleveland (Jack) of Arlington, Hadyn Evans of Cedar Park, Dylon Evans (Jaimee) of Brownwood, and Masyn Evans-Clements (Brandon) of Round Rock and eleven Great Grandchildren (Melana Jennings, Audrey Jennings, Ezekiel Jennings, Hanna Cleveland, Sarah Cleveland, Matthew Cleveland, Winnie Evans, Benjamin Evans, Millie Iva Nell Evans-Clements, Ava Jennings, Silas Jennings, Fletcher Evans-Clements).
Funeral services for Ben will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, November 3, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Brownwood. Burial will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Heartland Funeral Home on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
