Following their 46–34 road victory at Glen Rose Friday, the Brownwood Lions have moved up another spot to No. 7 in the Class 4A Division I rankings, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
The Lions, off to their first 4-0 start since 2019, will face their toughest test to date at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host the Class 4A Division II Waco Connally Cadets (3-1) at Gordon Wood Stadum.
Connally won its first three games of the season and was ranked in the 4A Division II Top 10 before falling at 4A Division II No. 2 China Spring, the two-time reigning state champion, by a 61-41 count Friday.
The Cadets enter Friday’s contest averaging 53 points and 550 yards per game, including 491 rushing per contest as running back Kiefer Sibley has amassed 1,090 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in four games. Defensively, the Cadets surrender 38 points per game and gave up 48 points and 421 of China Spring’s 518 total yards in the first half last week.
The rest of this week’s DCTF 4A Division I Top 10 includes No. 1 Tyler Chapel Hill (4-0), No. 2 China Spring (3-1), No. 3 Boerne (3-1), No. 4 Celina (4-0), No. 5 Anna (2-1), No. 6 Kilgore (3-1), No. 8 Lubbock Estacado (4-0) – Brownwood’s District 2-4A Division I rival – No. 9 Iowa Colony (4-0) and No. 10 LaVernia (10-0).
Stephenville (2-2), ranked No. 6 in last week’s poll, dropped out after a 42-32 loss to Abilene Wylie. Brownwood will host Stephenville on Friday, Sept. 29 for the 83rd Battle of the 377.
