SALSA, a local non-profit organization, founded in 2019, will join with thousands of local community-based organizations in hundreds of cities and communities in all 50 states to celebrate Mexican Independence and launch Hispanic Heritage Month.
The total population of Hispanics in the U.S. is 62 million, of whom over 40 million are of Mexican ancestry. The celebration in Brownwood will be Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 5:30pm-11pm at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center.
The celebration will include music provided by DJ Rain, food vendors, and arts and crafts vendors. Games for kids will be played throughout the evening. The schedule for other activities will be as follows:
- 6:30pm – Loteria, the uniquely Mexican version of Bingo, followed by a cake walk
- 7pm – Pinata smashing will begin
- 7:30pm – Sack races and water balloon tossing competition
- 8pm – Hottest sauce judging contest; $5 entry fee due by 7:30
- 9pm – Selena modeling contest
- 9:30pm – Best Grito contest
- 10pm – 50-50 raffle: a $1 ticket won $850 last time
Admission is free. SALSA is inviting the general public to come and enjoy the fun.
National Hispanic Heritage Week was started by former president Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. The late President Ronald R. Reagan made it Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988.
