After coming off a successful season in the XFL in 2023 with the league runner-up DC Defenders, Matt McCrane hasn’t stopped increasing his strength and refining his technique.
He received a call in June from the Baltimore Ravens and attended the 3 day Veteran Mini Camp to be evaluated as a potential backup to league leading kicker, Justin Tucker.
“They have one of the most elite special teams units with coaches Chris Horton and Randy Brown,” McCrane said. “I was able to spend three days training and learning from Justin Tucker to apply to my kicking technique. I’ve focused on hitting the ball with more power and driving downfield through the kick.”
McCrane converted 8 of 9 kicks with a long of 55 yards in team periods at the Veteran Mini Camp.
This has apparently worked well as can be seen from a recent post on Instagram showing consecutive field goals towards opposite ends of 60 yards.

This past weekend, Matt also attended and won a Virtual Free Agent Workout in San Diego with his coach, former NFL kicker Nick Novak and went a perfect 11 of 11 with a long of 60 yards against other NFL free agents such as Matt Ammendola and Austin MacGinnis.
