If you are a property owner, your 2023 property taxes will probably be significantly lower than last year. The Texas Legislature passed a new law that raises the Homestead Exemption on school taxes to $100,000 from the current $50,000. Governor Greg Abbot has signed the law, and it must be approved by the voters in November to take effect.
You should have received a postcard in the mail last week like the one shown above. That postcard refers you to the website “Texas.gov/propertytaxes” to view a proposed estimate of your 2023 property tax bill. Once there, in the section labeled “Property Tax Transparency in Texas” click on “Find Your County’s Website.” Then find and click on Brown County (or whatever county in which you own property). Then enter your property ID number (shown as Account Number on the Brown County Notice of Appraised Value, Tax Statement or Tax Receipt), or property owner name, or property address.
You will then be able to view a table that shows your 2022 property taxes plus an estimate of what your 2023 taxes will be, if the Homestead Exemption reduction is approved by the voters.
