This week was the 19th annual West Texas Legislative Summit at Angelo State University in San Angelo. I could not be more proud of this community and how our community is shaping national policy on energy, agriculture, national security, and more.
We were especially blessed to be joined by Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa and Senator John Cornyn of Texas as our keynote speakers along with a bipartisan group of federal and state lawmakers, officials, and industry professionals.
Thank you to my fellow honorary co-hosts State Senator Charles Perry and State Representative Drew Darby, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, and all of the staff and volunteers for pulling off this wonderful event.
Colonel Charles and JoAnne Powell VA Clinic
In 1995, I was seeking a nomination to the Air Force Academy. Two phenomenal individuals—Charles and JoAnne Powell—guided me through the interview and appilcation process for the Academy. They were both instrumental in my journey to the Academy and subsequent military service, and they showed the same level of care to thousands of other students through the years.
Nearly 30 years later, it is incredibly humbling to have had the opportunity to introduce and pass the legislation renaming the San Angelo VA Clinic in honor of Col. Charles and JoAnne Powell, and this week we celebrated the renaming alongside their beloved family and community leaders.
They are both true American heroes who dedicated their lives to serving our country through a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force, as Commander and “First Lady” of Goodfellow Air Force Base, and later in civilian life when they became two of the most ardent advocates for veterans and military members while JoAnne served this congressional district for more than 35 years. They made San Angelo their home and enriched this community.
Now, every veteran who walks in for care at the Colonel Charles and JoAnne Powell VA Clinic—and every person in the community who drives by—will be a part of the legacy of Charles and JoAnne.
Two-Tiered System of Justice Continues
Americans have watched the Biden Administration’s two-tiered system of justice play out yet again with this week’s indictment and arraignment of former President Trump. As House Republicans uncover years of foreign influence peddling schemes in the Biden family, the Department of Justice is choosing to attack President Biden’s top political opponent.
We will not be swayed. Already, House Republicans have conducted over 559 oversight hearings, sent 857 letters of inquiry, and issued 45 subpoenas. We will continue working to expose the corruption in the Biden family and further evidence of a two-tier system of justice.
Buffalo Solider Memorial Opens in San Angelo
The Buffalo Soldiers were African American soldiers who served in the United States Army after the Civil War and were stationed here in San Angelo at Fort Concho. Despite facing discrimination and prejudice, these courageous individuals dedicated their lives to upholding the values of freedom, justice, and equality.
Karin Kuykendall and other members of my team were honored to attend the opening & dedication of the new Buffalo Soldier Memorial in San Angelo—which stands tall as a testament to their indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in the face of adversity. It reminds us that the fabric of our nation is woven together by the contributions of those who were willing to fight shoulder-to-shoulder for the ideals we hold dear.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the NAACP and all the individuals and organizations that tirelessly worked to bring this memorial to fruition—especially Sherley Spears, who executed her vision to honor the legacy of the Black regiments.
Her dedication and passion have ensured that the memory of the Buffalo Soldiers will endure, and their contributions will never be forgotten.
Town Halls Across Texas
It’s been a pleasure to be back in Texas traveling the district this week. So far, we’ve hosted Town Hall meetings in Garden City, Brady, Mason, and San Saba. These meetings are an excellent opportunity for me to hear your thoughts and concerns and answer questions. Thank you to all who came out! If I missed you, please join me in Killeen and Harker Heights on August 15th and 16th—more information below.
