She was born Doris Ruth Mercer on April 10, 1930, in Talpa, Texas to Silas “Bud” Mercer and Izora Mertice Bryson Mercer. Doris grew up in Talpa and attended Centennial School. She married Adolphus Laneal “Snooky” Maedgen on August 4, 1946, in Valera. Doris worked for Talpa-Centennial School in the lunchroom for many years and she also worked as a waitress for JoAnn Baker’s café in Valera. Doris said that the most important job was being a mother and homemaker for her family. She loved her family immensely and leaves behind an amazing legacy for her children and grandchildren.
Doris loved to be outside working in her yard or sitting on the porch. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds and the changing of the seasons. Doris will be sorely missed.
Preceding Doris in death are her parents, Bud and Izora Mercer; her husband Adolphus “Snooky” Maedgen; and two brothers, Creath Mercer and Jimmy Mercer.
She is survived by her children, Vicki Cardinas and husband Lynn of Coleman, Karen Bartholomeo of San Angelo, and Bruce Maedgen of Valera; four grandchildren, Dana Cardinas, Salem Maedgen, Cameron Maedgen, and Christopher Maedgen; and four great-grandchildren, Bryson Maedgen, Piper Maedgen, Willow Maedgen, and Mila Maedgen.
The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made in memory of Doris to the Valera Cemetery Association, C/O Vicki Cardinas, 122 E. 24th. Street, Coleman, Texas 76834 or to Coleman Home Health and Hospice, 1214 S. Commercial Avenue, Coleman, Texas 76834.
