The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Friday afternoon:
On Wednesday, May 31, at approximately 11:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1300 block of 13th St. regarding suspicious text messages.
Officer James Holdar arrived at the complex and, as he walked to the apartment, he observed 33-year-old Cody Jack Childs walking away from it. Mr Childs appeared to be walking with a purpose i.e. getting as far from officers as he could.
Officer Holdar and Officer Collin Davis attempted to contact the resident of the apartment to no avail. They then walked in the direction of where Childs went and located him hiding behind a privacy fence; crouched behind two air conditioning units. Childs had no right to be at that location and could not explain why he was hiding except to say that he’s had bad experiences with the police.
Childs was detained and the area between the air conditioning units was searched for contraband. Beside the units, officers located a black nylon bag containing a small digital scale, a small matchbox containing .69 grams of suspected Methamphetamine and other various items. Officers also located a black Walther PK .380 caliber pistol.
Childs was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1, Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Tampering with Evidence.
