Skylar Sanders is the lone graduate from Brown County Christian School for 2023, as her graduation will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, May 15.
Being the only member of a class may be odd for some, but Sanders – who considers herself quiet and reserved – welcomed the change from a traditional setting.
“For the most part it doesn’t feel like anything too different,” Sanders said. “I kept to myself when I went to a public school, so it’s about the same. I’ve enjoyed it. It definitely has a different feel, but I enjoy it over public school.”
Sanders described the classroom environment at Brown County Christian School, located on the Victory Life Church property.
“The seventh grade through 12th grade are all put together in one classroom and we do our work online,” Sanders said. “We’re all together, and we do our Bible class that way, too.”
Sanders cited Bible class as her favorite, and said of those she went to school with, “they’re kind and loving and welcoming.”
Following graduation, Sanders, the daughter of Todd and Sarimah Sanders – who own the Harvest Restaurant in Comanche – will head overseas to continue her education.
“In March of 2024 I’ll be going to France for my culinary associates degree,” Sanders said. “I’ll be going there for a year, then after that I don’t know what I plan to do.”
Sanders said her father found information for Gastronomicom – an international culinary school located in Agde, France and founded in 2004 – online and asked if she’d be interested in attending the school.
“We found an advertisement for the school online and my dad asked if I wanted to go,” she said. “I’ve signed up and am accepted so now I just have to wait.”
Following in the family footsteps, Sanders sees a culinary future awaiting her.
“I want to do something more along the lines of baking and pastries, but I’ve always thought along the lines of becoming a private chef or owning a café,” Sanders said. “I just want to be doing what I love, which is baking and cooking.”
Sanders thanked her parents for the role they’ve played in her education and growth as a person.
“I want to thank my parents because through every passion I’ve had they’ve always supported me and helped me grow as a person, and raised me in a Christ-centered family,” she said. “They’re the reason I am the person I am today.”
