AUSTIN – May Lady Tiger Amanda Harrell became the first of Brown County’s 10 entrants in the UIL Track and Field State Championships to earn a medal Saturday afternoon, placing second in the Class A girls discus.
Harrell’s best effort of 126-1 came on her sixth and final attempt, which allowed her to leap bronze medalist Milly Hughes of Strawn’s best throw of 120-10. Lasara’s Xiomara Rodriguez won the state championship with a top effort of 136-11.
Harrell opened the event with a throw of 112-8 followed by a scratch, a 114-9, a 119-0, another scratch, then the 126-1.
The event – originally scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. – finished around 1:30 p.m. due to multiple lightning delays.
Harrell almost reached the medal stand again Saturday as she placed fourth in the Class A girls shot put.
On the fifth of her sixth tries, her hurled the shot 35-2.25, almost one foot better than on of her other efforts, which left her behind only state champion of Claire Burleson of Rocksprings (39-1.25), silver medalist Calie Hernandez of Roby (38-10) and bronze medalist and discus state champion Rodriguez of Lasara (36-5.75).
Harrell’s effort, in order, were 32-4, 31-1.25, 34-4.25, 33-5.25, 35-2.25, and 33.0.75. Her best performance beat out fifth-place Aaliyah Brown of Perrin-Whitt’s 34-8.25.
In the last event with a Brown County entrant, the May Tigers 4×400 relay team of Lane Goodson, Damian Salinas, Ben Harrell, and Bryson Guerrero came in fourth place in a time of 3:32.79 – just missing out on a medal.
May advanced to state as the wild card – the top third-place team at a regional meet from all four regions around the state. The Tigers ran a 3:32.56 at the Region II-A meet in San Angelo.
Follett (3:29.36) captured the state championship followed by silver medalist Meridian (3:31.03) and bronze medalist Gordon (3:31.58).
