AUSTIN – The Bangs Dragons were represented in two Class 2A boys events at the UIL Track and Field Championships Friday at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium.
First, in the 4×100 relay, the Dragon foursome of Keygan Pitts, Tyson Woods, Hunter Newton and Guy Powell were clocked at 43.78, good for eighth place.
Later in the evening, Powell returned to the track for the 100-meter dash where he came in ninth place in time of 10.99.
Refugio won the Class 2A boys 4×100 relay in a time of 41.95 followed by silver medalist Stamford (42.2) and bronze medalist Timpson (42.69). The Dragons, runners-up from Region I-2A, owned the ninth-best regional time of 43.82 and shaved off five-hundredths of a second at state.
Ernest Campbell of Refugio claimed the 200 meters championship in a time of 10.22 trailed silver medalist Bobby Drake of Bremond (10.52) and Carson McCoy of Thorndale (10.79). Powell entered the meet with the fourth-best regional time of 10.68 among state qualifiers.
The Brown County contingent concludes its state run Saturday in the Class A ranks. The schedule features May’s Amanda Harrell in the Class A girls discus at 9 a.m.; Blanket’s Levi Vazquez competes in the Class A boys long jump at 9 a.m.; Zephyr’s Ronni McClain takes part in the Class A girls pole vault at 11 a.m.; Harrell is back in action in the Class A girls shot put at 12:30 p.m.; and the May Tigers’ 4×400 boys relay wraps up the weekend action at 8:20 p.m.
