GLEN ROSE – After missing the postseason a year ago, the Brownwood Lady Lions advanced to the second round of the playoffs in 2023, but their softball season reached its conclusion Saturday afternoon with a 10-1 loss to Krum in the second game of a Region I-4A softball area playoff series.
District 6-4A third seed Brownwood (12-15-1) dropped the first game to District 8-4A champion Krum (24-8-1) Friday night by a 10-0 count after a 2-hour, 27-minute weather delay, and the Lady Lions were unable to solve the Lady Cats in the rematch.
The Lady Lions surrendered the first eight runs Saturday before tallying their only run of the series in the top of the fifth inning. Kyleigh Caperton led off the frame with a single to center field and Cecilia Rodriguez followed with a base hit over second base. Later in the inning, an RBI ground out by Tynlea Wilson allowed Caperton to score from third base after stealing the bag.
Brownwood mustered four hits in the finale – one each by Caperton, Rodriguez, Wilson and Mackenzie Welch, who collected the Lady Lions’ two hits in the series opener. The Lady Lions finished with 13 strikeouts for the second game in a row.
In the circle, Wilson was tagged for seven earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and seven walks, while the Brownwood defense committed seven errors behind her.
The Lady Cats scored once in the first inning, twice in the second, five times in the fourth and added two runs in the sixth.
Offensive standouts for Krum were Kinley Johnson with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, while Addison Martindale added a single and plated two.
Krum will advance to face District 7-4A champion Burkburnett (30-6-1) – which knocked off Brownwood’s District 6-4A rival and league runner-up Glen Rose, 4-0 and 2-1 – in the regional quarterfinals next weekend.
Prior to the start of the series, Brownwood High athletic director announced Cherita Munguia would take over as head coach of the softball program after serving on an interim basis for the majority of the season.
