The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning:
On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at approximately 6:20 a.m., Brownwood Communications received a 911 call of a domestic disturbance in progress. The caller reported that her uncle was attempting to stab a female family member.
The suspect, 39-year-old Israel Rivera Cintron of Brownwood, fled the scene in a silver Chrysler SUV prior to officer’s arrival. Officers continued driving toward the residence which was in the 1800 block of 7th St while others canvased the area for the suspect vehicle.
The suspect vehicle was observed in the 1400 block of 13th St and a traffic stop was initiated a block later, in the 1300 block of 13th St. Immediately, upon parking the vehicle, Cintron exited and began yelling at the officer. Cintron refused to obey the officer’s instructions and eventually leaned back into the vehicle and retrieved what appeared to be a black semi auto pistol. Cintron then fled into an alleyway north of the traffic stop location.
The officer gave chase on foot and as he entered the alleyway, he observed Cintron turn and raise the pistol as if to shoot at him. The officer fired his pistol at Cintron prompting him to turn and continued to flee on foot. Cintron turned south and approached the 2300 block of Coggin Avenue where other officers arrived and attempted to take him into custody. Cintron threw his pistol to the ground as he was being confronted by the other officers, but he continued to argue and resist their attempts to arrest him. A Taser was deployed and Mr Cintron was taken into custody. The black semi auto pistol was retrieved and discovered to be a BB gun.
Cintron was arrested and charged with, Burglary of a Habitation w/Intent to Commit Another Felony, Evading Arrest, Resisting Arrest and Aggravated Assault w/a Deadly Weapon against a peace officer. Other charges are pending
As with any officer involved shooting, we will conduct an administrative review of the event separate from the criminal investigation to ensure our Department policies and practices are in keeping with industry standards. The officer directly involved in the shooting is on leave per Department policy.
