Coach Stephen Lynn earned his 300th career win in today’s double header versus Concordia University Texas. Concordia Texas won the first game 10-2, and Howard Payne won the second game 3-2 with a walk off.
Game 1
Concordia started off the game in the first inning with two runs. Howard Payne’s JP Zuniga-Rodriguez scored one run in the bottom of the second, off of an error by the Tornados.
By the top of the fifth, Concordia was able to score three more runs total, making the score 5-1 CTX.
HPU scored one more run off of a hit by Tanner Benson, bringing home Joey Villarreal. This put the score at 5-2 CTX.
In the top of the sixth, Concordia scored five runs, making the final score 10-2 Concordia.
HPU’s Carson Wert led the team with three hits, followed by Joey Villarreal with two hits. Pitching 5.0 innings, Brayden Ferrie had five strikeouts for the Yellow Jackets.
Game 2
The Yellow Jackets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Sam Lampson doubled down the left field line, allowing Joey Villarreal to score.
The Jackets scored again in the bottom of the sixth off of a hit up the middle by Landon Prestage, bringing home Sam Lampson for the run. This made the score 2-0 HPU.
Concordia scored two runs in the top of the seventh, tying the game 2-2.
Going scoreless until the eleventh inning, HPU’s Sam Lampson singled up the middle for a walk off win, 3-2 HPU.
Yellow Jackets’ Sam Lampson led the team with four hits and two RBI. Starting Pitcher Brendan Read pitched 8.0 innings and had four strikeouts. Pitching for .1 innings, Anthony Cook will take the win for today’s game.
The Yellow Jackets are now 19-20 overall and 12-14 in conference. They will finish out the CTX series tomorrow, April 29th, at 1:00 pm at Don Shepard Park.
