The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets swept an American Southwest Conference baseball doubleheader from the Ozarks Eagles Friday at Don Shepard Park, 20-6 and 12-10.
In the first game, Howard Payne scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and added seven more in the third.
The Yellow Jackets finished with 19 hits and 10 came from the first three batters in the order – right fielder Tanner Benson (3 for 5, 4 RBIs), second baseman John Garza (3 for 5 with a triple, double and 3 RBIs), and catcher Kayden Kelly (4 for 4 with 2 RBIs). Third baseman JP Zuniga-Rodriguez finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and left fielder William Buford went 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBIs.
Brayden Ferrie picked up the win on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing five earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
In the second game, Howard Payne trailed 3-1 after one inning but grabbed a 6-3 edge in the second that grew to 12-4 after four frames.
The 13-hit assault included three more from Kelly, who drove in four, and two hits and two RBIs apiece from Garza, shortstop Joey Villarreal, and designated hitter Landon Prestage, who homered.
On the mound, Gary Blair collected the win as he worked five innings and surrendered five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Bryson Adare recorded the save, logging the final two outs with one hit allowed.
The Yellow Jackets (16-17, 9-11) – currently sitting in sixth place in the American Southwest Conference standings – and Ozarks (7-25, 6-14) conclude their three-game ASC series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Don Shepard Park. The top six seeds advance to the ASC championship tournament as seven league games remain for HPU.
