Students in Shelly Taff’s English 3 classes at Brownwood High School are participating in a mock trial. “Each student has a specific role they must research, understand and act out for the trial,” stated Taff. “Students have been assigned various roles including prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, bailiff, court reporter, journalist, court clerk, witness, and juror.”
“Members of the Brown County Courthouse volunteered their time to consult with the students and their respective roles,” added Taff. “A big thank you to Judge Smith (District Judge), Michael Murray (District Attorney), Elisha Bird (Assistant District Attorney), Alexander Hunn (Assistant District Attorney), Michael Sheedy (Bailiff), Tammy Watkins (Court Reporter), Cheryl Jones (District Clerk), and Lisa Villeareal (Deputy District Court).”
“The students gained firsthand experience and knowledge from leaders in the community,” stated Taff. “The Mock Trials are set for April 17th and 18th. Students are now using the knowledge they learned to complete their research and prepare for the upcoming trial.”
